We were invited to a colleague's house for a Cajun party a few months ago. He is a good friend and is African American. I didn't even think about the mix of people at a "non-work" party until Hubby said, "Is this going to be an all black party?" Not in a racist way, but in a "what should I expect" way? And for a few minutes, when we realized we were indeed the only "crackers" there, it was a little uncomfortable. But that didn't last long. Food, fun and some good conversation broke the ice quickly. It's funny, I had never really thought about how he must feel being the only black man at a job that primarily employs white women. I certainly considered it from that point forward. Thanks, everyone! This post started going in one direction, and by the time I finished typing, it had taken a different one. I wanted to make fun of the way most crackers feel in situations like this, while to minorities in our country, it’s been “like this” for decades. But once I started typing, it just became how it really didn’t matter to me (considering where I live) and my children, and I hope, like some of the good commenters say above, that it doesn’t matter at all to anyone in the near future.

Interesting to say the least, I guess you have to consider, who, whether black/white/asian/indian/latino attends a parade. My bet is a pretty safe crowd with lots of children. These are the minorities that are like our neighbors, we should embrace, as they have the same goals we do – making our community a better place to raise children and prosper. It certainly will be interesting to watch our new President get his hands around the many social issues our land faces. He has an opportunity, somewhat like LBJ had. Let’s hope for better outcomes.
