11.30stuff white people dislike: a shortage of white people
If there’s anything a white person can’t stand, it’s to show up at an event, look around, and realize there are no white people to be found anywhere around him. Black people are expected to deal with this scenario if they want to climb the social ladder (See, e.g., private schools, suburban housing, corporate box seats, rodeos), but when the reverse occurs, well now, geese and ganders have different needs, don’t they? Or is it ducks and geese?
Imagine a scenario in which a white person travels two hours to Montgomery, Alabama to visit his in-laws for Thanksgiving. He’s already in hostile territory; it’s his in-laws’ house. Then, they take him to the local Thanksgiving parade. He’s picturing Macy’s with fewer TV cameras. Instead, he sees this:
Grrrrrrrrrr. And this:
Who gets stuck driving the meth mobile? And this:
Check out that urban assault vehicle we bought with our Homeland Security dollars! Then, the white person realizes the locals are asserting that the Pilgrims and Native Americans were of color:
And that even the turkey doesn’t look like him!
Hell, if we’re not careful, these crazy folks will get themselves a President of color!

He tries to enjoy the music, the free candy, the dancing, and the marching. He even befriends the man next to him, who is from Duluth, an Atlanta suburb. They laugh at the irony of the white person’s living in the city while the black person lives in the suburbs while they now share a Thanksgiving together, a few feet in front of the former White House of the Confederacy, and a feet feet behind the hundreds of HBCs’ bands, baton twirlers, and majorettes who are performing.
Not everyone notices there’s a difference in his family and the thousands of surrounding families, however.
As long as there are students in marching bands who play tunes for dancing, and kids on floats who toss suckers for catching, all’s right in Maddie’s world.
And as long as there’s a warm body to rock him to sleep, all’s right in Owen’s world.
And as long as the two little ones are happy (and the meth mobile stays on its side of the barricade), all’s right in Father Muskrat’s world.

Those last two photos are two more reasons I’m glad Obama got elected, our kids are just going to see less and less of a difference in skin color as they grow up. Awesomeness.

Meth mobile? Seriously?
Also, thanks for the interesting look. Here there are no “black communities” and “white communities”, so seeing this through your eyes was enlightening.

Interesting to say the least, I guess you have to consider, who, whether black/white/asian/indian/latino attends a parade. My bet is a pretty safe crowd with lots of children. These are the minorities that are like our neighbors, we should embrace, as they have the same goals we do – making our community a better place to raise children and prosper. It certainly will be interesting to watch our new President get his hands around the many social issues our land faces. He has an opportunity, somewhat like LBJ had. Let’s hope for better outcomes.

Well, I had this really cool comment, but then I got distracted by CommentLuv. Needless to say, I “Stumbled” you because I really enjoyed the post and think it needs to be seen by a wider audience (if it isn’t already been seen by a huge audience

Thanks, everyone! This post started going in one direction, and by the time I finished typing, it had taken a different one. I wanted to make fun of the way most crackers feel in situations like this, while to minorities in our country, it’s been “like this” for decades. But once I started typing, it just became how it really didn’t matter to me (considering where I live) and my children, and I hope, like some of the good commenters say above, that it doesn’t matter at all to anyone in the near future.

We were invited to a colleague’s house for a Cajun party a few months ago. He is a good friend and is African American. I didn’t even think about the mix of people at a “non-work” party until Hubby said, “Is this going to be an all black party?” Not in a racist way, but in a “what should I expect” way? And for a few minutes, when we realized we were indeed the only “crackers” there, it was a little uncomfortable. But that didn’t last long. Food, fun and some good conversation broke the ice quickly.
It’s funny, I had never really thought about how he must feel being the only black man at a job that primarily employs white women. I certainly considered it from that point forward.
